I want to breastfeed but worry about my high blood pressure

by Jen (Canada)

I have high blood pressure and I want to breastfeed. But I worry that the sleepless nights will cause my blood pressure to rise even more. Do you have any ideas about this?

Thanks, Jen

High blood pressure medications

Is your high blood pressure due to the pregnancy or do you have high blood pressure even before being pregnant?

Pregnancy-induced hypertension should go away shortly after delivery, so that shouldn't be a problem after the baby is born.

If you have a history of high blood pressure, the medications you take may be of concern. Ask your doctor to determine whether your medicines are compatible with breastfeeding.

Breastfeeding provides natural relaxation hormones which would have a lowering effect on blood pressure. As far as night rest goes; bottle feeding at night is far more disruptive to the sleep cycle. Keeping baby nearby, (not turning on any lights, or going into another room, or preparing a bottle, etc...) and just nursing will allow both mom and baby to quickly return to sleep.
