Lanolin Cream

When you are in the thick of things and your breasts feel like they have been over-used and much-abused, you may wish to wash them, love them, and apply creams to make them feel better. But here’s the facts: don’t.
There are small glands on your areola (the colored area around your nipples) called Montgomery glands. These tiny bump on your areola secret a substance that lubricates & protects your nipples. Let this natural moisturizer protect your breasts. Don’t wash your breast with soap – this would wash off the oils produced by the Montgomery glands. Don’t apply creams - this may remove or dilute the natural oils that help your breasts. |

If you have sore or cracked nipples which are unbearable, you can use a cream that contains lanolin. Though most people don’t know it, lanolin is a greasy, waxy substance made by woolly animals like sheep. Crude lanolin is used for all sorts of things like shoe polish and anti-rust grease. These crude forms of lanolin are contaminated with alcohols, pesticides and antibiotics. They are not suitable for your breasts.
When you buy a cream with lanolin in it, be sure that it is a purified form that is appropriate for breastfeeding moms. Two such creams are: Lansinoh and PureLan100
These creams will sooth your breasts and give you a little relief; however, they will not cure cracked nipples. (For that, you need to wait and let them heal themselves. Rest, and a good, healthy diet will promote repair and healing.)
